Northeaster TOUR Vrontados - Sikiada - Pandoukios - Lagada - Kardamyla - Pitios Starting from the city of Chios, we head north following the eastern's coast irregular shape. Shortly after exiting the town, we arrive at Vrontados, a pretty coastal village offering many bathing and sea sports facilities. Nearby, visitors can admire Daskalopetra (the teacher's stone), a place where it is believed that Homer was teaching his students. The historical Monastery of Mersinidi, dedicated to the Mother of God, is located north of Vrontados,on a precipitous place above the sea. Ships use to greet the Mother of God by sounding their horns, when passing by. A few kilometres further on the road following the edge of the precipice, we reach Lagada, a beautiful fishery village built along a lengthy cove. Either in Lagada, or in the next village, Kardamyla, many taverns offer excellent dishes incuding excellent fresh fish and sea food. Kardamyla, a medieval village, offers many visiting opportunities. It is also known as the home of Greece's most important shipowners. Continuing north-west, af ter the little harbour of Nagos, we climb up towards the mountain villages of Armades, Vi ki and Kampia. From there, we proceed to the monastery of Moundon, dedicated to Agios loannis Prodormos (St. John Baptist), offering good samples of byzantine architecture and art. Our tour continues through the village of Dievha towards the town of Chios, our starting-point. On the way, a short trip offers us the opportunity to visit Pitious, a preserved medieval village. |
